IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) comprises a toolbox of standards developed by the Time-Sensitive Networking Task Group of the IEEE 802.1 Working Group. TSN standards build upon Ethernet standards to provide bounded low latency and reliability to specific communication streams in spite of their coexistence with other types of traffic, over a converged, shared network infrastructure. These standards provide functionalities spanning time synchronization, bounded low latency, high reliability, and resource management. TSN is a critical technology to enable IT/OT convergence whilst ensuring interoperability with modern advances in Internet networks and services that are the building blocks of Industry 4.0 and its evolutions, from software-defined and programmable networking, to virtualization and cloud-nativization, and to end-to-end intelligent network orchestration.
In SLICES-Euskadi we offer a TSN blueprint that makes use of switching and testing equipment based on TSN technology, in order to carry out experiments in the context of deterministic and reliable converged industrial networks.
Switching equipment enables the interconnection of end stations over a TSN network with a topology and configuration defined by the experimenter. The switching equipment available in the blueprint is the following:
A 12-port 1 G/10 G Time-Sensitive Networking switch with support for 802.1AS, 802.1Qcc, 802.1Qbv, 802.1Qav, 802.1CB, and 802.1Qci.
4-port 1 G Time-Sensitive Networking switch with support for 802.1AS, 802.1Qcc, 802.1Qbv, 802.1Qav, 802.1CB, and 802.1Qci.
Can be plugged into the provider Linux servers in order to provide them with hardware-based TSN networking capabilities.
2x RELY-TSN-PCIe: A TSN endpoint bridge PCIe NIC with two GbE ports with support for 802.1AS, 802.1Qcc, 802.1Qbv, 802.1Qav, 802.1CB, and 802.1Qci.
Spirent TestCenter solution and Spirent SPT-N4U chassis (16 1G/10G ports) for TSN validation and testing, supporting several test cases for 802.1AS, 802.1Qav, 802.1Qbu, 802.3br, preemption, 802.1Qbv, etc. Supports powerful capabilities regarding test definition and automation, traffic generation, reporting, and analytics. This equipment can be used to validate the conformance and performance of the experimenter's own TSN equipment.
Time-Sensitive Networking modelling and configuration software tool that generates the optimal configuration of network devices, guaranteeing that latency constraints are met.
General-purpose servers that can be used as end stations executing virtualized or bare metal applications that communicate over a TSN network. The experimenter can use their own applications or use default benchmarking applications provided as part of the blueprint. Additionally, the experimenter can configure real-time and TSN features of the operating system and kernel as part of their experiment.
